Not sure? Questions to ask a supplier or certifier
If a supplier, restaurant, or certifier isn’t listed above, or you don’t have enough information, these are the questions you can ask them.
Learned something about a supplier? Let us know to help us keep this page updated.
Preliminary questions
- Is the slaughterer Muslim?
- Does the slaughterer say Bismillah before slaughtering?
- Is the facility used exclusively for halal slaughtering? If not, is the facility secure enough to prevent cross-contamination with non-halal products?
- Is it hand-slaughtered or machine-slaughtered?
For machine-slaughtered products
- Is the person saying Bismillah the same person who turns on the machine?
- Does the person continuously recite Bismillah as long as the machine is going on?
- If there are multiple persons saying the blessing during their shifts, are they also part of turning on the machine?
- Is due diligence exercised to make sure that each animal was slaughtered properly?
- If a controlled stunning process is used, is there a mechanism to remove the animals that might have died in the stunning process?
